Artist Statement Guidelines
Blizzard Bag #3
An “ artist statement” is an informative document which accompanies a created artwork. It is written by the artist and explains the intentions and art making processes to the viewer. Oftentimes an artist statement is helpful when trying to understand an abstract work which does not tell a story or whose meaning may be unclear.
Use a computer to write a one page “Artist Statement” in a word document.
Use 12 point arial font for the body, and double-space the text and include:
¨ Heading: “ Artist Statement” must be 16 point font, centered on the top of the page, in bold type and underlined.
¨ The title of the work and your name in 14 point font, bold .
¨ The body: 5 paragraphs, 12 point font
¨ Print the document and hand in.
The artist statement must clearly address each of the 5 points:
1) Describe your work. Include the obvious visual information such as colors, size, media, title, shapes, composition description, etc. Look at the overall composition (art principles) and the details (art elements).
2) Describe your “problem”. What was the assignment? The problem was the assignment given to everyone in class. You must restate the assignment in your own words.
3) How did you solve the problem? Describe your artistic, creative process. What did you do? Did you plan first? Did you make rough sketches? Did you use ideas which occurred during the process of making ? Think about how you worked and the process of creating and coming to a resolution (completing the project).
4) What does the work MEAN? Explain the meaning of your final project. (This probably related to the title of the work)
5) How successful was your solution to the problem?
Explain how you met your goals. Evaluate how well you achieved what you intended. Explain what you did well, explain what you had problems doing, explain what you learned in the process. Remember: mistakes often teach us more than successes. BE SPECIFIC.
